Abbess Bryony was said to be the great-granddaughter of Gonff and Columbine, and is distantly related to Dandin. She succeeded Meriam as Abbess of Redwall Abbey.
Bryony and Dandin have both been described as being the great-grandchildren of Gonff, but being that Outcast of Redwall takes place chronologically before Mariel of Redwall, it is more likely that Bryony is the real great-grandchild, and Dandin is just a future descendant. See the Family Tree page for more information.
When Swartt Sixclaw abandoned his son Veil after failing to infiltrate Redwall, Bryony adopted the ferret as her own child, and took great care of him. She cared deeply for Veil, and after he was banished from Redwall she pursued him and tried to bring him back to Redwall Abbey. She followed him all the way to Bat Mountpit where Veil had reunited with his father. He later died when he saved Bryony's life by jumping in front of a thrown spear intended to hit her.
After she returned to Redwall, Bryony claimed that the ferret was completely evil, despite Veil's sacrifice.
In High Rhulain, it is learned that as Abbess she took an interest in birds of prey, even going so far as to write a comprehensive volume on the subject.
