Brother Methuselah was a bespectacled wise old mouse, and Gatekeeper at Redwall Abbey. He was well-known for Abbey record-keeping and chronicling, and lived alone.
Methuselah could also understand any creature, as he had the gift of tongues.
In his old age he befriended Matthias, and together they found the tomb of Martin the Warrior.
Methuselah was murdered by Chickenhound, who hit him with his bag of stolen goods, while attempting to stop him from robbing the Abbey. He was said to be the oldest mouse ever to live in Redwall Abbey.
Half of the recast Joseph Bell was named after him, and Matthias' son Mattimeo's full name was Matthias Methuselah Mortimer.
