Brother Rufus was a male, sensible and solid-looking mouse, a brother of Redwall Abbey. He and Brother George were guarding The Gatehouse and threshold for Methuselah in the morning after Matthias and Constance had seen Cluny the Scourge and his horde. Later Rufus and George reported about an incident with one of Cluny's rats, who had tried to get in the Abbey. Rufus was also present when Cornflower destroyed Cluny's siege tower with his lantern. He was also known to have invented a specific compound to deal with stings of insects.

Later in Mattimeo, Brother Rufus helped to defend Redwall Abbey during the besiege of General Ironbeak and his horde.
