Cheek was an orphaned otter who did not like water. While Matthias, Jess Squirrel, and Basil Stag Hare were searching for their children, who were stolen by Slagar the Cruel, they found Cheek by the slaver's abandoned "decoy" cart. Cheek then showed the group the direction Slagar went.
Afterwards, Basil adopted him, and Cheek changed his name to Cheek Stag Otter. He also adopted Basil's appetite and manner of speaking. He was vital when Matthias and his companions were pinned down by archers in a river with small flesh-eating fish, he was scared at first, but when Orlando the Axe knocked him off the raft into the water, he figured he liked swimming. He countered the fish by eating them all. Cheek also joined the assault on the Kingdom of Malkariss, adopting Basil's skills. He is described as a bit of a rascal, and often mimics various characters' ways of speaking as a joke. This leads Basil to say that the name Cheek is well suited to him.
