Cheek was an orphaned otter who did not like water. While Matthias, Jess Squirrel, and Basil Stag Hare were searching for Slagar the Cruel, who had stolen their children, they found Cheek and he showed them where Slagar went.
Afterwards, Basil adopted him, and Cheek changed his name to Cheek Stag Otter. He also adopted Basil's appetite and manner of speaking. He was vital when Matthias and his companions were stranded in a river with small flesh-eating fish (he countered the fish by eating them all). Cheek also joined the assault on the Kingdom of Malkariss adopting Basil's skills. Throughout the book, he is described as a bit of a rascal, and often mimics peoples ways of speaking as a joke. This leads Basil to say that the name Cheek is well suited to him.
