Dirig was an ermine captain in the Gulo the Savage's horde of a hundred white vermin. He was the only named ermine captain in the horde; the rest were foxes. After Yoofus Lightpaw, Ferdimond de Mayne and Doogy Plumm played a trick on the horde, Gulo sent Dirig and three other ermine to hunt them down. Dirig chased the trio through Mossflower Woods, but, in his rush to get at Yoofus, who stayed back to taunt him, he failed to notice a hidden swamp; he and his three ermine fell in, and were drowned.
