Ferdy Stickle was a young hedgehog member of the Corim who lived in Mossflower with his family: his father Ben Stickle, his mother Goody Stickle, and three siblings, Coggs, Spike, and Posy. Along with his twin brother, Coggs, Ferdy was captured by Tsarmina's troops to be held as hostages to force the woodlanders to surrender. In the dungeons of Kotir, the brothers befriended a goodhearted wildcat, Gingivere, who hid Ferdy and Coggs in his cell to confuse Tsarmina. Once the hue and cry for the supposed "escapees" had died down, the three prisoners were rescued by the otter Mask, who was sent as a spy by the Corim.
Ferdy and Coggs were well-known for being mischievous, and idolizing Gonff the Mousethief and Martin the Warrior. They both also thought they would make excellent soldiers, and were often given "missions" by Lady Amber and Skipper to keep them out of trouble. These "missions" often were simple, such as as guarding Brockhall in a toy tent.
After Kotir had been destroyed, the duo became the first Cellarhogs of the newly-built Redwall Abbey. During the construction of the Abbey, Ferdy and Coggs provided one of the most important features of the Abbey by smithing and installing the famous weather vane, where the Sword of Martin would eventually be placed.
