"She'm a gurt flutterer, that un. Oi losed moi 'eart to 'er long seasons agone. Hurr, but she'm a foin arctress too!"
Buckler

Celandine was a vain young squirrelmaid who was talented at singing and a member of the Rambling Rosehip Players. She seemed to take a liking to Felldoh and often flirted with him. She added frills and lace to her Rambling Rosehip Players tunic, which unfortunately hindered her as she tried to escape from Badrang the Tyrant's cronies, causing her to be captured. Fortunately, she was rescued by Felldoh, Rowanoak, and Ballaw De Quincewold.

After she was rescued, Celandine took all the credit for the rescue mission. During the celebratory feast, Celandine became shocked after Ballaw jokingly commented on her weight. She then later openly criticized the Rosehip Players and freed slaves by telling the maidens of the troupe that the creatures who wanted to fight back were silly, and that they would get injured or dirty. Unfortunately for her, Gauchee could not stand her haughtiness any longer, she was given two options: train as a fighter or help in the cookhouse, while at the same time looking down the end of Gauchee's javelin.

The night after Felldoh's ambush on Badrang, Ballaw, Rowanoak, Buckler, Trefoil, Celandine, and Brome performed for the freed Fort Marshank slaves.

She later joined the Fur and Freedom Fighters, helping to create a barricade. While the former slaves and actors were pinned down by fire arrows, she interrupted Ballaw telling him that he had never even made a short speech in his entire life. After the war against Badrang the Tyrant, she lived the rest of her life in Noonvale in peace.

Celandine was not very brave or strong but was not bad-hearted either. She was known to bat her eyelashes at all handsome woodlanders, whether they were squirrels or not, and often shirked her duties in the Rambling Rosehip Players' camp (cooking, cleaning, etc.).

Celandine from the Redwall TV Series, season 3

The character of Celandine in season three of the Nelvana Redwall TV series played a much more minor role than in the book. Her performance at Marshank was shortened, she never openly criticized the troupe and freed slaves during their time of training. She also never scoffed at the idea of Ballaw making a speech. Celandine doesn't help the maidens of the troupe create a barricade, instead hiding behind a large boulder. In a scene that never occurred in the book, Celandine is seen comforting Brome at Felldoh's funeral.

Trivia[]

  • 'Celandine' is pronounced with the letter 'C' as 'K', not as in 'C' in "cell."
