UK Redwall Collector Cards

Redwall Collector Cards are sets of promotional cards featuring cover artwork and characters from Redwall novels. They were unavailable for purchase in any store and commonly handed out at bookstores when a customer purchased a Redwall novel. Collector cards were also given out to members of the Redwall Readers Club, and those who made purchases online at the Redwall.org shop. The cards are approximately 2.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches high. They are all currently out of print.

There are at least five different series, four for the U.S. and one for the UK.

U.S. Redwall Collector Cards[]

1998 Philomel Series One[]

The first series of Philomel Redwall Collector Cards were released circa 1998 as a set of seven, and included Redwall, Mossflower, Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, Salamandastron, Martin the Warrior, and The Bellmaker.

The cards featured artwork from the U.S. hardcover editions, a summary of the book, an impression of Brian Jacques' signature, and a number at the bottom. The text was characterized by a large first letter for each summary. The phrase "Printed in Hong Kong" appears to the summary's immediate left, and only the aforementioned seven books are listed at the bottom, with the text "Other books in the Redwall Series".

  • Card #5, Salamandastron, features a printing error - Ferahgo the Assassin's name is misspelled as "Ferhago".

  • 1. Redwall

The young mouse Matthias must defend Redwall Abbey against the savage rat Cluny the Scourge. Matthias is unsure if he is up to the task, but aided by the spirit of Martin the Warrior, his confidence grows and he saves Redwall and fathers a son, Mattimeo.

Martin the Warrior helps build Redwall Abbey in Mossflower Woods. With the help of his friends, Dinny the mole and Gonff the mousethief, Martin kills the vicious wildcat queen, Tsarmina, and repels her army in a valiant clash of good and evil.

Like his father, Matthias the Warrior, young Mattimeo must step forward and become a fighter. The young mousemaid Mariel and her father, Joseph the Bellmaker, are kidnapped by the sea pirate Gabool the Wild. Mariel is thrown into the sea and left for dead, but her indomitable spirit and desire for revenge help her to survive. With her friend Dandin and a weapon of her own making called the Gullwhacker, Mariel rescues her father and takes his bell to Redwall.

Urthstripe the Strong, one of the badger warlords of the fire mountain known as Salamandastron, must face and conquer Ferhago the Assassin and his villainous horde. Urthstripe is reunited with his long-lost brother, Urthwyte, before he dies in a courageous battle on the shores near Salamandastron.

The son of Luke the Warrior, Martin is unwittingly transformed from a frightened mouse into the greatest hero in the annals of Redwall. The former slave Martin raises an army to defeat his captor, the ruthless stoat Badrang the Tyrant, and wins back his father's sword. The young warrior's valiant spirit becomes the inspiration upon which Redwall Abbey depends, even after Martin's death.

Joseph the Bellmaker becomes concerned about his daughter, Mariel the Warriormouse, who has been gone almost four seasons in search of adventure. After an ominous dream, Joseph joins the intrepid Finnbarr Galedeep and his crew to rescue Mariel from the vile Urgan Nagru and save the captured castle of King Gael.

The Tears of All Oceans are missing. Six magnificent rose-colored pearls that inspire greed in all who possess them, they have been stolen from evil emperor Ublaz Mad Eyes and hidden separately inside Redwall abbey, connected to one another only by cryptic riddles. Ublaz is desperate to recover his lost treasure, desperate enough to hold Redwall's father abbot as hostage. Can the peaceful Redwallers solve the riddles in time to save their beloved abbot?

  • 10. The Long Patrol

Tamello De Fformello Tussock is one restless hare. He can't wait to join the Long Patrol - that band of warrior hares who make their home at the top of Salamandastron Mountain. When his father tells Tamello that he is not yet old enough to fight, the young hare sulks and runs away. Eventually joining the fighting hares as they help defend Redwall Abbey from the vicious rat Rapscallions, Tamello learns the hard way what life, death, and honor really mean.

2003 Philomel Series Three[]

The third series of Philomel Redwall Collector Cards were released around 2003 - 2005 and featured up to 18 cards, including Redwall, Mossflower, Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, Salamandastron, Martin the Warrior, The Bellmaker, Outcast of Redwall, Pearls of Lutra, The Long Patrol, Marlfox, The Legend of Luke, Lord Brocktree, Taggerung, Triss,Loamhedge, Rakkety Tam, and High Rhulain.

The cards featured artwork from the U.S. hardcover editions, a summary of the book, an impression of Brian Jacques' signature, and a number at the top. The phrase "Cover illustration © Troy Howell" appears to the summary's immediate right, with the phrase "For a complete list of books, please visit www.redwall.org PHILOMEL BOOKS a division of Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers" appearing at the bottom. The latter text changed to "Penguin Young Readers Group" after Card #16.

The summaries from the 10 cards of the 1998 versions were reproduced for the first 10 of these cards, however card #2, card #3, card #7, and card #9 have printing errors as described above that were not present in Philomel Series Two or Philomel Series One. The printing error that was previously in card #5 was corrected in this series.

Martin embarks on a perilous journey to the place where his father, Luke, abandoned him as a child. There, within the carcass of a great red ship he uncovers what he has been searching for - the legend of his father and the story of the evil Pirate stoat, Vilu Daskar.

  • 13. Lord Brocktree

Dotti, a brazen young haremaid, and the badger Lord Brocktree, a fearsome warrior, embark on a perilous journey to Salamandastron, the legendary mountain of the badger lords. But there they encounter the vicious wildcat Ungatt Trunn and his infamous Blue Hordes, who have been reeking destruction all over the mountain, terrorizing the creatures who live there.

  • 14. Taggerung

Denya, an otterbabe, is kidnapped from Redwall Abbey by Sawney Rath to be the new Taggerung of the evil Juska clan, but Deyna rebels. With his new friend, the mouse Nimbalo, he fights off the Juska who want to kill him, and finds his way home to Redwall.

  • 15. Triss

Triss the squirrelmaid and her friends Shogg the otter and Welfo the hedgehog, having escaped the slavery of the evil ferret king and his daughter Princess Kurda, find their way to Redwall Abbey, where Triss takes up the famous sword of Martin the Warrior.

  • 16. Loamhedge

Martha, a young haremaid, begins a quest to find Loamhedge, the original and ancient home of Redwall Abbey's founders. Loamhedge might hold a secret that will enable her to walk again. But Raga Bol and his band of evil vermin begin their own quest - to capture the mystical sword of Redwall.

  • 17. Rakkety Tam

An adventurer by the name of Rakkety Tam stumbles across Redwall Abbey in Mossflower Woods...and it steals his heart. A vicious wolverine, Gulo the Savage, attacks the Abbey searching for a relic called the Walking Stone but when the Long Patrol helps to repel Gulo, Redwall is saved yet again - by a new and unlikely hero.

  • 18. High Rhulain

The otters of Green Isle have long been enslaved to the Wildcat Riggu Felis and his catguards, who torture the otters at every opportunity. The otters trudge on, waiting for the day that their savior will arrive - the prophesized High Rhulain, who will lead them in battle and a return to glory.

2007 Firebird Series[]

The Firebird Redwall Collector Cards were released in 2007 as a set of 19; they were packaged together with the Twentieth Anniversary of Redwall Gift Set.

The cards are for the books Redwall, Mossflower, Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, Salamandastron, Martin the Warrior, The Bellmaker, Outcast of Redwall, Pearls of Lutra, The Long Patrol, Marlfox, The Legend of Luke, Lord Brocktree, Taggerung, Triss, Loamhedge, Rakkety Tam, High Rhulain, and Eulalia!.

The cards featured artwork from the U.S. Firebird paperback editions, a summary of the book, an impression of Brian Jacques' signature, and a number at the top. The text was characterized by italic font, and features the phrase "For a complete list of books, please visit www.redwall.org FIREBIRD An Imprint of Penguin Group (USA) Inc."

The summaries from the 10 cards of the 1998 versions were reproduced for the first 10 of these cards; the summaries from cards 11-17 of Philomel Series Three were reproduced for these cards as well.

A vicious wolverine, Gulo the Savage, attacks the Abbey, searching for a relic called the Walking Stone, but when the Long Patrol helps to repel Gulo, Redwall is saved yet again - by a new and unlikely hero.

Young Tiria Wildlough, an ottermaid at Redwall Abbey, has longed for her chance to learn the ways of the warrior. Then an injured osprey arrives, seeking help for its wounds and carrying tales of the enslaved otters of Green Isle, who work and wait for their savior - the prophesied High Rhulain, who will lead them in battle and a return to glory. And then Tiria knows what she must do...

Across the sea comes Vizka Longtooth, with a scurrilous crew of Sea Raiders bound for plunder and conquest. Aboard, a young badger lies captive. The aged Badger Lord of Salamandastron sends forth a haremaid, questing for his successor. A young thief is exiled from Redwall. A Brownrat chieftain, with his savage horde, ravages Mossflower Country. The fate of these creatures, both good and evil, is caught up in this saga of war and destiny.

UK Redwall Collector Cards[]

There are 12 known UK Redwall Collector Cards; they were published circa 2000. The cards feature a Redwall character, with a brief biography on the back. There are seven heroes, and five villains. The UK collector cards depict Urthstripe the Strong, Martin the Warrior, Cluny the Scourge, Grath Longfletch, Matthias, Mokkan, Joseph the Bellmaker, Gabool the Wild, Slagar the Cruel, Folgrim, Lord Brocktree, and Ungatt Trunn.
