Friar Cockleburr, also called Cockles, was an excitable male hedgehog who lived at Redwall Abbey. He was originally the assistant cook of Friar Alder. During the siege of Redwall by Greypatch, Cockleburr threw a hard turnip at the searat, temporarily blinding Greypatch's one good eye. After Friar Alder retired, he became the head friar of Redwall. He was renowned for his cornflower custard, as well as for using alliterative exclamations such as "Perishin' puddens!" and "Simmerin' seasons!"
