Gurn was a male shrew of the Guosim who was such a good digger it was said that his grandfather was a mole. Gurn helped to dig Matthias, Jess Squirrel, Orlando the Axe, Jabez Stump, Basil Stag Hare and Cheek out of the cave where they were trapped by Slagar the Cruel.

Note: Gurn has been misspelled as Gum in the paperback version of the book.
