The Lance is a light wooden pole terminated by a pointed metal head. It can be thrown at long range* or thrust against an enemy at short range. The lance butt can be used to strike enemies to thwart assaults and deter attacks.

This is commonly the weapon of choice of many members of the Long Patrol.

*Footnote: After the 17th Century (though was first referred to by this definition in the 3rd century) lance refers to a heavy thrusting spear. It is likely that the lances of the Redwall series are in fact spears or javelins instead of their heavier counterparts due to that lances are not throwing weapons and probably much too heavy to be effectively thrown. ^[1]
