Lady Melesme of Salamandastron ruled the mountain for over 27 seasons. She made a drum for the Redwallers and sent eight hares to deliver it, but it was stolen by Gulo the Savage and the hares were killed.

Melesme was described as old, but a powerful ruler. She wore a homespun tunic and an apron.

Melesme sent out one hundred Long Patrol hares led by Brigadier Buckworthy Crumshaw to retrieve the drum and finish off Gulo and his vermin horde. She commanded that every single beast be slain to avenge the deaths of her hares.
