Mother Mellus was the Badger Mother of Redwall Abbey in the time of Abbot Bernard, and cared for Dandin when he was young. She assisted with defending the Abbey against Greypatch while Dandin, Mariel, Tarquin Longleap Woodsorrel, and Durry Quill went to Terramort Isle. Mellus rescued Hon Rosie with Flagg after the vermin fled.

Extremely protective of Dibbuns, Mellus gave her life defending Mousebabe and Furrtil the mole. Upon seeing that their treasure was nothing more than their playthings, the searat captain Slipp threatened the Dibbuns with a kitchen knife when Mellus charged into him. But the knife in Slipp's paw was stabbed into Mellus' heart, killing her instantly. She was buried on the Abbey grounds.

Mara eventually succeeded her as Badger Mother of Redwall, many seasons later.
