Sagaxus was a young badger of Salamandastron and the son of Lord Hightor and Lady Merola. The name of Sagaxus meant "wise"; it probably derives from the English word sagacious, also meaning wise. He was a descendant of Russano the Wise.

He disobeyed his father Hightor and despite his father's warnings about Kroova Wavedog, he ran away from the mountain with his hare friend Bescarum to go questing, and the two joined Kroova Wavedog on his ship the Stopdog. Together they had varied adventures, they met Migooch Tribe, a sea otterwife Raura Shellrudd and a seal called Slippo and later, were captured by Plugg Firetail and his crew, but Sagaxus and his friends were fortunately on the ship, which a young squirrelmaid Triss and an otter Shogg re-stole.

Later he helped Triss and her friends, using the double-bladed axe of Plugg Firetail as his weapon. Sagaxus was looking for the rear exit of Brockhall with Triss, Shogg, Skipper and the others. When he killed the adder Harssacss during a battle against Princess Kurda and other vermin, Sagaxus was under the influence of Bloodwrath.

He spent a lot of his time at Redwall Abbey but also visited Salamandastron. His succession of his father as Salamandastron Badgerlord is assumed.
