Does anyone have any idea what species exactly the Painted Ones are? I thought that they may be monkeys, but it's not certain. Any ideas?

In The Long Patrol they were a tribe of tree rats. It's unlikely that the ones in the book Mattimeo were monkeys, because of Brian Jacques' reluctance to bring in exotic species. They were probably tree rats too.

No. They are definitely NOT lemurs or monkeys. In The Long Patrol and Doomwyte, they are shown as rats. The show had errors in it, so we cannot say that they are lemurs or monkeys because the show made them appear to be. Longtail Horde Edit

One of the riddles in Mattimeo warns: "make no noise with spear or sword/Lest you wake the longtail horde". Is the "longtail horde" in the riddle a reference to the Painted Ones?
