Not sure if this is something that's already been considered before, but rooks are actually a different species from crows and ravens. They are c. frugilegus, and look different from crows and ravens as well, with pale white bone-colored beaks as opposed to the other corvids' black or dark yellow. I suspect that Jacques used the word "rook" in the sense of referring generally to any species within Corvidae, but still: if jackdaws are categorized as a separate species from crows, why aren't rooks?
