Umfry Spikkle was the grandson of Corksnout Spikkle. He was young, a simple type who was not overburdened with learning. However nobeast ever remarked on this because he was a big hedgehog of prodigious strength. The only beast physically bigger than him was his grandfather, who he eventually outgrew.
Umfry we renowned at Redwall Abbey for his loud snoring. Abbot Glisam appointed young Umfry to the position of Gatekeeper, however he was temporarily stripped of this job after letting Doomwytes in by leaving the gates wide open.
He helped in the search for the Doomwyte jewels. Umfry originally didn't know how to read; later Glisam retired and became Abbey teacher to teach him to read and write. This enabled him to hold the position of Bellringer, and later Abbey Recorder.
