Dear Diary, This morning Brother Javias had me mix herbs for him. Poor Maria has a dreadful cold; so I hope the herbs work. I heard Sister Erina scolding Audrai again; I've no doubt in my mind that my sister deserved it, as usual. How I do wish she would keep her cool and stay out of trouble! Maybe if mother was still here, Audrai would be good. It embarresses me she acts like a dibbun. Well, the day's to nice to waste in here, so I'll go outside for a spell.
Celendine closed her diary and stood up. Pausing to stretch for a moment, she thought about her mother and how she had died. Namera had passed away to the Dark Forest giving birth to her and her twin Audrai. As for her father, well, Celendine didn't know anything about him. It was as if he never existed. She passed her friend Tobias in the hall. For as long as she could remember, he had been her closest friend, other than her sister. Tobias understood her better than Audrai ever would. Tobias also liked many of the same things she did. He greeted her cheerily, "Hey Celendine! Would you like to help me water my plants?" Tobias kept a blooming garden in his room, and he doted on them as if they were children. "Sure Tobias, I would lo-" "GET BACK HERE Audrai! GIVE IT BACK, GIVE IT!!!" The sudden commotion was caused by Valesse, the most snobby vole anyone had ever met. Indeed, Audrai had kidnapped her precious jeweled bracelet.
"Catch me if you can O Miss Great One," Audrai laughed back. Round and round they ran through the rooms, Valesse screeching and Audrai so giddily laughing. But Celendine had a plan, so She hurried back into her room. Reaching under under Audrai's bed, she pulled her sister's small trunk out. Each one of the twins had few possessions, but what they had, they counted as gold. Audrai had inherrited a golden arm band. Set with exquiset swirling designs; it was Audrai's most prized possesion. Celendine hurried back into the frenzy. Standing on top of a table she yelled as loudly as she could, "WELL AUDRAI, SINCE YOU LIKE VALESSE'S BRACELET, I'LL JUST HAVE TO GIVE HER YOUR ARM BAND TO MAKE IT FAIR!" The commotion ceased. There was silence in the Hall.
A very pale faced squirrel came out. "You wouldn't Celendine!" Celendine smiled wickedly, "O but dear sister, I most certainly would!" Audrai was, for one of the few moments in her life, silent. Then Valesse came panting and puffing up. "You ugly faced, toad tongued bully! Give me back my bracelet this instance," she demanded as she stamped her foot. The pale faced Audrai was replaced by an infuriated squirrel. But before Audrai could tackle the vole, Celendine stepped in. "Now Valesse, that is no no way to treat Audrai.," she said sharply. "Now, as for you Audrai, apologize to Valesse at once. Then you will give her back her bracelet." A very shamefaced Audrai mumbled her apology and returned the treasure. She turned, and to the on lookers who had gathered, snapped "Get back to your duties," and ran away to her room.
Audrai was ashamed of her behavior. She sat on her bed sobbing. It wasn't fair, Celendine was always the good one; the angel; the perfect of the two of them. Audrai resented this. She didn't cause trouble out of spite, she just hated the boring life here at Redwall. Sure, it was nice, for someone who loved it; like her sister. But Audrai longed for the life of peril, adventure, and excitement. The very things she loved, her sister hated. Thus, Audrai made her own adventures to cheer herself up. Today, Valesse had told her that her mother had died because she, Audrai, had worn her out to the point of exhaustion. In Audrai's mind, taking the bracelet was a form of payback. Abbess Penelope always smiled at Celendine; to Audrai, a slight frown creases her face, and the Abbess shook her head. Celendine, to Audrai, was a goody two paws. Audrai at last finished sobbing. She lay her head against the pillow, and stared out the window. The world outside of Redwall was mysterious, enchanting; Audrai dreamed of traveling to a world far away. She read the stories of the great champions of Redwall Old. Redwallers like Matthias, Mattimeo, Gnolf the Mouse Thief, and Martin were the only things keeping her motivated to Ace her classes. Every spare minute she could, she read. Legends, War, and danger swirled around in her mind. It was another way she passed from the dull reality. Now, she imagined herself fighting a sea rat, and slipped into a sleep full of dreams.
Celendine was mortified at her own behavior. She hated being the center of attention, and by nature she was extremely quiet. She was with Tobias, looking at his plants and pretending to be listening. In reality, she was trying not to cry. Tobias turned twards her. "You know, I'd really like it if you called me just Tobi. We are to close for formality." "Alright, Just Tobi," she joked, "But I want to be called Celendine still." "Deal, Celendine Still" and they shook paws on it.
Silver mist swirled around Audrai. She heard a voice calling her. She saw nobody, and even though she was curious, she felt this was not a place one should explore. A figure stepped out of the mist. Audrai recognized him. "Martin!" She ran towards him. But he stopped and held up his hand to stop her as well. He spoke:
Leave this place,
And make haste,
You must journey on.
Fulfill your longing,
Follow your calling,
Go to Salamandastron!
Then, in a bright flash, Martin was gone, and she was awake. Scurring off her bed she kneeled and pulled her trunk from under her bead. Taking a sack, she put her arm band, a sling shot, a blanket, and a rope; inside of it. She also stuffed in some candles and flint. Creaking the door slowly open, she peeped outside into the hall. The coast was clear, so she scurried to the Infirmary room. But a problem awaited her. She had no idea what herbs she should take! She stood in front of the unlabeled jars, trying to guess. A voice behind her spoke, "Ah, I believe you are searching for these, Audrai." Audrai jumped and whipped around. There was old Brother Jovius, holding a small bag of food, and a handful of herbs. "You'll need these traveling to Salamandastron." Audrai, once again, was gaping.
Dear Diary, I have a confession to make. Today I mortified my sister in front of everyone her at Redwall. When she is calmed down, I will apologize for my behavior towards her. I am so very ashamed of myself. Tobias though it was funny, but I know it was not. It did not work out peace, it caused hurt feelings. Speaking of Tobias, he asked me to call him Tobi. He becomes more and more like a brother to me. Sometimes, I blush as I say this, I think of him as more than a friend. But I have more urgent matters, such as making up to Audrai, to focus on right now.
Sitting beside the Abbey pond, Celendine sighed. She shouldn't have done that to her sister, but Audrai had deserved it, hadn't she? She was the one who caused trouble. She was the one who made chaos. And on Purpose! When will she ever grow up and get herself together? "Spite; she does this to us out of spite!" Celendine was very angry at her sister. She wouldn't have hurt Audrai's fellings if Audrai stayed out of trouble! She kicked the water that lapped at her feet. "Audrai laughs at us. She's a bully." To herself she said, "Just like the sea rats."
"H-h-how did you k-know," Audrai stammered. Brother Jovius looked solemnly upon her. "I had a visit, Just as you did child. Now, What shall I tell your sister and the people here of your abscence?" Audrai's paws were fists. She was beyond rationable at Celendine. But Brither Jovius would not let her leave without an answer. "Tell Celendine, that I've gone to follow a calling. In fact, tell everyone that. Don't tell where I am going though. They will stop me if they know." Brother Jovius nodded his gray head. "This I will do." Audrai turned to head out of the door way. But she felt something pressed in her hand. It was a dagger. She looked up at Brother Jovius. "Thank you. Goodbye, dear friend." She ran out of the doorway, down to the west gate. She opened the wooden door and shut it. "Redwall, I shall never forget you." She took her dagger and carved two letters on the wood:
A~C
"Sweet sister, know that I still love you."
Dinner was extremely quiet without Audrai there. Everybody, including Celendine, figured that Audrai had a headache from crying. That was why nobody noticed her abscence sooner. Celendine and Tobias talked about all sorts of things while eating. Tobias told Celendine that he would like to invent things when he was older. This made Celendine even more interested in him. "What kind of things?" "Oh, things like, maybe for dibbuns to play on outside. That kind of thing." For the rest of dinner, they talked about things that interested them. They even found they had a lot in commom. Tobias told Celendine he didn't like to travel. She, of course, didn't either. She told him she hated war. He, of course, didn't either. So it was a sad fact when dinner was finished. Celendine felt she ought to find her sister and apologize. "Well in that case, allow me to accompany you to your room." Tobias held out his arm, and Celendine linked hers through his. "Thank you very much Tobi, for everything this evening." "It was no problem,a friend was in need of some cheering up. Oh, dont look at me like that, I can tell you were struggling with your feelings." Upon reaching her room, Audrai and Tobias said good night to one another. Audrai entered her room feeling slightly flustered, but strangely excited. "Audrai, I want to apologize to you." When there was no response, Audrai tries again. "Please don't be angry at me Audrai. I am terribly sorry for my behavior." Silence greeted her again. Panic rose up within Celendine. She began to search her room. "Audrai?" "Audrai?" She decided to give in to her last resort. "Audraissa, come here now!" When the looming silence once again greeted her, Celendine knew her sister was gone.
Audrai, meanwhile, was having the time of her life. Never before had she ventured past the dusty road in front of the abbey. So now, with her heart fluttering, she skipped and danced along her way. Twirling, she sang a ditty she made up:
"I'm free,
to be me,
and i like,
what I see!
I'm free,
to be me,
and OUCH!
I just skinned my knee!"
Chaoes insued when everyone found out Audrai was gone. They searched the dusk looking for her and calling her name. Celendine had locked herself in her room, and was sobbing uncontrolably. My sister hates me! I never told her how much I loved her or that I was sorry! I may never see her again! What if something happened to her?! All these thoughts ran through her mind like a swift moving creek. A hollow space in her heart grew bigger every minute. Celendine felt beyond guilty. She wasn't sure if she could live without Audrai. And the worse thought of all haunted her, What if I caused her to go to her death?! A knock on her door pulled her out of her trauma. "Go away please!" A gentle voice spoke back to her. "Is that anyway to treat your old teacher?" "I'm coming Brother Jovius, I'm sorry." She hurried to her room door to open it. Brother Jovius stepped inside and relocked the door. "I have a messge from you sister to tell you, my dear." "Audrai? Oh, please don't tell me. I know she is angry at me!" Brother Jovius shook his head, "Perhaps, but that is not what she told me to tell you." Celendine sat down on her bed. "Alright, relay the messege." "Your sister tells you not to worry about her. She says she is following a calling." Celendine layed back on her bead. "Of course she wouldn't tell me where she was going. Oh, Brother Jovius, What if I sent her to her death!?" At this point, Celendine broke down.
