Ziral was a Marlfox, the daughter of Queen Silth. Like all Marlfoxes, she was pale-eyed, had grey fur mottled with black and dark blue, wore a drab brown and green cloak (for camouflaging), and used an axe as a weapon. She and her siblings were sent to Mossflower Woods to acquire things of beauty by their mother. Ziral could be impatient and had a short temper, and thought that the hunt for items of beauty was a useless trip. Ziral was sometimes paired with her brother Mokkan, for example when they stole the Guosim longboats.

She fought in the battle which occurred after the Marlfoxes tried to exchange Dwopple for Redwall Abbey's treasures. During this battle, she tried to attack Janglur Swifteye, but the squirrel wrested away her axe, and beheaded her with one swipe, making her the first of the Marlfoxes to die. Ziral's death started the war between the Marlfoxes and the Redwallers.
